Theme Parks that are Pet-Friendly!

Despite the somewhat crazy economy, people are still finding time to enjoy life and have fun.  So far this year, the travel industry has seen a spike in families wanting to travel with their dogs and more companies are having to adapt to this rising trend.  Hotels and airlines are doing their part in trying to be more pet-friendly, but did you know that there are actually pet-friendly Amusement Parks?!  (We can't stop smiling!).  Some popular Theme Parks across the United States offer pet-sitting and kennel care for pets while you and the rest of your two-legged family members enjoy the rides, entertainment, and fun.

The most visited and well-known park Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida has 5 theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, The Hollywood Studios, & Fort Wildnerness) that will care for dogs, cats, and even hamsters for $15 a day.  You'll need to provide food for your pets, but they will care for them and for additional fees they will walk, cuddle, give medicine, and even provide an "ice cream break" for your pet.

In 2009, Walt Disney World is planning to build a one-of-a-kind luxury pet resort which will provide a full range of pet hospitality services, including dog boarding, day care and grooming services, and doggy day camps.  Pet guests will be able to enjoy luxury suites with raised beds, televisions and they can participate in activities such as nature walks and playgroups.

We love that theme parks are starting to acknowledge the traveling family who want to share their vacation with their pets and hope to see more companies soon follow in this trend.  If nothing else, it gives us dog and pet lovers more options on how to include our furry family members more!

Here are a list of some other popular theme parks with pet-friendly amenitites:

  • Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida - $10/day per pet
  • Sea World - $8/day per pet.
    • Orlando, Florida
    • San Diego, California
  • Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida - Free outdoor shaded area.
  • Kennedy Space Center - Free indoor area.
  • Universal Studios in Hollywood, California - Free air-conditioned area.
  • Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio - $15/day per pet.
  • Dollywood in Tennessee - $12/day for a kennel, or $30/day for a doggy cabin.
  • Six Flags has 4 locations that are pet-friendly.
    • Valencia, California
    • Atlanta, Georgia
    • St. Louis, Missouri
    • Gurnee, Illinois
  • Canada's Wonderland in Ontario, Canada - $6/day
  • Carowinds in Charlotte, North Carolina - $10/day
  • Gilroy Gardens - Free on first come first serve basis.
  • King's Dominion in Doswell, Va - $5/day
  • King's Island at Kings Mill, Ohio - $15/day

If you are planning on traveling to an amusement park with your pets, make sure you contact the park about details so you can be prepared with any necessary documentation (vaccinations typically) and/or items the facility might not provide, like food and water.  Thanks for stopping by our blog and happy traveling Spoiled Canine furiends!

Sincerely,
The Spoiled Canine Team

Looking to own a dog?

So you're looking to get a dog?  GREAT!  Canine companionship is a wonderful experience!  The decision to add a four-legged member to your family is an important one and should not be taken too lightly; after all, a dog is a lot of responsibility.  Of course owning a dog and dealing with the responsibility is all worth it, but it's important to understand that along with the good times comes the tough times (i.e. training, illness, finding a trusted person or place to watch your pooch when you go out of town, etc.).

Once you've decided that you and your family are ready to commit to a canine companion, it's time to give some serious thought to which type of breed will best meet you and your families needs.  Since most dogs were originally bred to have specific traits, characteristics, jobs or duties, it's important to research and learn about the breeds you are most interested in.  Some dogs are bred as hunting dogs or herding dogs, some need lots of exercise and others need very little, some dogs are very dependent on their masters while others prefer to be left alone at times, and some dogs are great with small children while others are not......the list goes on, but you get the idea - right?

Here is what you do not want to do:  You do not want to choose your companion based on his/her popularity or looks.  Even though a dog might be the cutest dog you have ever seen, your new furry friend will be looking to you to provide a safe, cozy environment that he/she will need to flourish and grow.  For example, if you choose to adopt or purchase a golden retriever, but are rarely home or have a small yard, your new family member might not be getting the exercise or attention that he/she needs.

Here are some important questions to ask yourself when choosing your breed:

  • How big will this puppy become?
  • How active is this breed?
  • Why was this type of dog developed; what was it bred to do?
  • Does this breed have special needs such as professional grooming?
  • Have I spent time with puppies, adults, and older dogs of this breed?
  • How does this breed respond to children?
  • What genetic and health problems can typically affect this breed?
  • How much does it typically cost to buy, feed and raise a dog of this type or breed?
  • What are the important differences between males and females of this breed?
  • Have I talked to anyone with this breed already in their family?

By asking yourself the above questions and researching ahead of time about specific breeds, you'll be doing yourself and your new furry family member a big favor.  Great places to learn about different breeds and their characteristics are at your local bookstore, the library, or searching for information online.

If after researching the many breeds, you still aren't sure which dog would be best for you and your family, think about fostering a dog!  You can refer to our previous blog
Not ready to own a dog....what about fostering a dog?  to learn more about this process.  Fostering a dog is a great way to help a dog in need temporarily and to also test out a breed to see if it would best suit your lifestyle.  Who knows, the one you foster could just be the one!

Sincerely,
The Spoiled Canine Team

"Don't let your dog get HOT under the collar"

Have you ever taken your dog with you for a quick errand and left him/her in the car while you rushed into the local drugstore for a few minutes?

Depending on the time of year, the weather, and the errand, I'm sure we've all made the quick decision to just crack the windows and promise our pooch that we will be "RIGHT BACK!" at some point in our lives.  Hopefully this blog will be a quick reminder that as summer approaches and the temperature rises, we all need to think twice about taking our dogs with us on that errand trip!  Dogs left inside vehicles on a warm day can suffer and can even die due to the extreme heat, so even if you left your furiend at home for the day keep your eyes open for other dogs that might need your help!

Abby and friend

Recently the pet friendly organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) published a brochure called, "Don't let your dog get hot under the collar," which explores the dangers of keeping dogs inside of hot cars and ways to help our furiends if they are experiencing heat exhaustion.  Listed below are some of the dangers, precautions, and laws that we should all be aware of.

THE DANGERS

  • It takes only minutes for a pet left in a vehicle on a warm day to succumb to heatstroke and suffocation. Most people don't realize how hot it can get in a parked car on a balmy day. However, on a 78 degree day, temperatures in a car parked in the shade can exceed 90 degrees -- and hit a scorching 160 degrees if parked in the sun!
  • Even when the outside air temperature is in the 60s, temperatures inside some vehicles can reach the danger zone on bright, sunny days. So many experts recommend not to leave pets or children in parked cars even for short periods if the temperature is in the 60s or higher.
  • Rolling down a window or parking in the shade doesn't guarantee protection either, since temperatures can still climb into the danger zone. And if the window is rolled down sufficiently, the pet can escape. Plus if a passer-by claims he or she was bitten through the car window, the pet owner will be liable. What about leaving the dog in the car with the air-conditioning running? Many people do this, but tragedy can strike -- and it has. For example, in 2003, a police dog in Texas died after the air-conditioning in the patrol car shut down and began blowing hot air. The air system's compressor kicked off because the engine got too hot. Many cars, including modern models with computerized functions, are prone to the same problem. In August 2004, a North Carolina couple lost two of their beloved dogs, and nearly lost their third dogs, as result of a similar failure. They had left bowls of water and ice in the car, and the air-conditioning on, during their shopping trip of less than 30 minutes.
  • Animals are not able to sweat like humans do. Dogs cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paws. If they have only overheated air to breathe, animals can collapse, suffer brain damage and possibly die of heatstroke. Just 15 minutes can be enough for an animal's body temperature to climb from a normal 102.5 to deadly levels that will damage the nervous and cardiovascular systems, often leaving the animal comatose, dehydrated and at risk of permanent impairment or death.

PRECAUTIONS

  • Leave your dog at home on warm days.
  • On trips with your pet, bring plenty of fresh drinking water and bowl.
  • Don't let dogs ride loose in pick-up truck beds. The hot metal can burn a dog's paws, the sun and flying debris can hurt the dog, the dog can accidentally be thrown out of the truck if the brakes are suddenly applied, and the dog can jump out if scared or upon seeing something interesting to chase. Instead, use a crate to create a safer space for the dog if you can't fit the dog inside the truck cab.
  • Take the dog into the shade, an air conditioned area, or to the vet if you see signs of heat exhaustion, which include restlessness, excessive thirst, heavy panting, lethargy, dark tongue, rapid pulse, fever, vomiting, glazed eyes, dizziness, or lack of coordination. To lower body temperature gradually, give the animal water to drink, place a cold towel or ice pack on the head, neck and chest, and/or immerse the dog in cool (not cold) water. Call your veterinarian.
  • If you see a pet in a vehicle on a hot day, take immediate action:  Note the car make, model, color and tag number, then go to the nearest stores and ask the managers to page the owner or call the police, which usually can respond much faster than can animal control departments. The police have the capability to enter the vehicle and rescue the pet.

LAWS

  • It is against the law in most jurisdictions to leave a pet unattended in a standing or parked motor vehicle in a manner that endangers the health or safety of the animal.  Please check your local and state laws regarding this topic, especially since the penalties for this act can vary.

Our dogs are our family and no one wants to see them suffer.  Just remember to use your best judgment when trying to keep your dogs safe and healthy and if you come across a furiend in need this summer try using one of the precaution tips above!

Sincerely,
The Spoiled Canine Team
